Go to google webmaster tools and login with your ID.
Verify your site with the html or the metatag by displaying the code given by google (This is done to ensure that you are the real owner of the site)
Then click the 6th option sitemap at the left of your window copy and paste this "atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=999"
Then your sitemap will be verified..
Advantages of sitemap:
Submitting a sitemap increases the probability of including your site in the searches.
There by there is a greater chance for your site to get listed in the top the search engines.
Motivates traffic to your site.
Get a higher pagerank and more money from ads.
